October: A Month for Awareness
Many facets of behavioral health are front and center this month as we recognize National Disability Employment Awareness Month, ADHD Awareness Month, World Mental Health Day and Down Syndrome Awareness Month. As summer turns to fall, it’s a good time to reflect on the diverse experiences and strengths of individuals with developmental disabilities. We can celebrate the continuing advancements in behavioral health care and look ahead to the work that still needs to be done to remove barriers and biases to create a more equitable world.

The Term Neurodiversity is Good, But Not Good Enough
The term neurodiversity was coined by a social scientist in reference to autism. Other historical terms have been imprecise or even hurtful, but “neurodiverse” is refreshingly inclusive sounding, writes Catalight Chief Clinical Officer Doreen Samelson, EdD, MSCP, with co-author Lisa Ruble, PhD. Yet, it too is imperfect – often referring to individuals with high intellectual ability but leaving those with profound disabilities left out.
