How to Ask for and Get Accommodations at Work

Congratulations! After all your hard work, a company is reaching out with a job offer. The next step is to ask for accommodations so you can be effective and successful in your new role. Even though you have every right to ask for accommodations, it can feel intimidating or scary to ask for what you need. To help you through this process, we’ve put together some practical tips below.

Determine What Accommodations You Need

First, think about what accommodations would help improve your productivity and wellbeing at work.

Reasonable accommodations include:

  • Ergonomic adjustments to your workstation.
  • A reduction of noise so you can concentrate on work.
  • Establishing a quiet space when you need less stimulation.
  • A flexible work schedule so you can avoid traffic or take public transportation.
  • Increased (or decreased) lighting above and around your workspace.
  • The option to be off camera during virtual meetings.
  • Receiving clear written tasks or meeting notes.
  • Have a weekly check-in meeting with your supervisor.
  • Performing one task at a time.
  • Getting a mentor in the company.

How to Ask for What You Need

Next, clearly communicate your needs. It’s best to frame the conversation with your new employer in a positive light. Emphasize how the accommodation can benefit both you and the company. For example, you can say, “I need this accommodation to do my best work and support the company’s goals.”

To prepare yourself for this conversation, practice what you’re going to say with a trusted family member, friend or even your pet. This exercise will help you feel more confident and relaxed when you speak with your employer.

Benefits of Getting Accommodations

Last, remember that the American Disabilities Act was established more than 30 years ago to protect everyone’s right to reasonable accommodations. Your new employer benefits when you’re successful so don’t be afraid to ask for what you need to meet your responsibilities. Most accommodations cost absolutely nothing or very little to implement.

Plus, accommodations can help increase productivity, reduce turnover and create a more inclusive workplace culture.
